HISTORY

Liberation Theatre Company is founder and a co-producer of Harlem9, producing the yearly event 48 Hours in Harlem. They were recently awarded an Obie awared for excellence in their diverse contribution to the Off-Broadway theater landscape.

Liberation Theatre Company was established in 2009 in New York City, creating programs to give playwrights dramaturgical services, professional readings, four-day workshops with facilitated feedback, and beginning in 2011, a widely successful Black Playwrights Group, where more than a dozen emerging playwrights have been supported in the furtherance of their works-in-progress through facilitated group discussion and the use of professional actors as readers. Joslyn Housley-McLaughlin’s The Silver Thread was written and developed in the Black Playwrights’ Group 2011.

In 2010, Liberation Theatre Company also initiated the creation of Harlem9, an alliance of black theatre producers in Harlem. With help from a grant awarded to LTC by the Harlem Arts Alliance, Harlem9 was able to produce “48 Hours in Harlem”, a weekend festival of new works by six emerging black playwrights and directors, in August 2011. Due to the sold out success of this venture in 2011, 2012 and 2013, a 2014 production of “48 Hours in Harlem” is slated for August 17, at National Black Theatre, showcasing a new crop of emerging artists.
